IGNORING THE PEOPLE THEY REPRESENT

In the rush to war, Tony Blair and the political classes at Westminster are acting without proper democratic accountability.

They claim to represent the British Public, but they are leading the nation into a war that it clearly does not want.

Repeated opinion polls show that most people do not want this war, without allowing further measured attempts to defuse the situation, which may avoid fearful loss of life, and prevent a catastrophic descent into terror.

Repeated opinion polls show that 90% of the British Public do not want Britain to follow George Bush into a unilateral attack on Iraq.

A huge majority of the public want Britain to act within the international legality of the United Nations.

It is perfectly clear - from several years ago if you study the Project for a New American Century - that American hawks have had a long-term plan to intervene in Iraq.

Most British People are far more moderate than George Bush, and yet those who lead us are subordinating our nation, our morality, and our safety, to the Bush Agenda.

Where is the Democracy in all this?

If Tony Blair claims to represent the people of Britain, then he cannot simply ignore the wishes of the people to determine their future for themselves.

The unprecedented scale of the London March on February 15th - a movement of people demanding democracy not witnessed before in our history - and the opinion polls which demonstrate that this was not "just 2 million" people but rather the physical representatives of the British mainstream...

These dramatic and clearcut expressions of the public will cannot be marginalised by Tony Blair, under the guise that a leader has the right to take his people in the opposite direction to the way that they want to go.

The People of Britain - by an overwhelming majority - are saying: NOT IN OUR NAME

Tony Blair is usurping our democratic freedom.

Tony Blair may attack another state against our will.

Tony Blair is IN DEFIANCE of the British People.

Democracy?

Democracy is not just a formula. It is a respect for the right of people to determine their own futures. For themselves. For their children. For far off people who they do not know.

We are not living in the Feudal System anymore. We are not even living in the paternalistic autocratic days of the British Empire. Most people want a modern democratic society, where their democratic wishes are respected.

Like the majority of people all over Europe, most British people want a step-by-step approach to Iraq. An approach which combines pressures with co-operative and rational alternatives. An approach which affords further time for gradual disarmament, instead of a headlong rush into war.

This is the sane majority view of Europe. This is the sane majority view of Britain.

Tony Blair's legitimacy ends at the point where he ceases to represent the people.

The voice of the people is loud and clear. It demands a democratic response. It demands respect. The leaders of this country must serve the public will.

Otherwise, Tony Blair is rejecting real DEMOCRACY.
